Promising Playwright, December 2013
"I was really determined on this. I had to have confidence, determination and I couldn't be shy. Just had to let all my ideas flow on the paper."
Nevaeh Edwards is just finishing her first semester with YPT's In-School Playwriting Program at Amidon-Bowen Elementary School. The focused fifth grade student is wiser than her years, and speaks eloquently about her interests. Her favorite class is English Language Arts.
Nevaeh wrote a play about five sisters who work together to fight their evil mother on Planet Lexaton. When two sisters are not strong enough to battle their evil mom, they convince their three other sisters to fight for good with them. The power of all five sisters intimidates the evil mother and she flees, no longer fighting for evil. Nevaeh came up with the idea when she and four friends were playing in the park with her older sister. They acted the story out, and in the coming weeks Nevaeh ran with the idea, developing it into a play.
"I already had the idea in my head but I just wanted to express it on paper so I could see it acted out," she explains. "I was really determined on this. I had to have confidence, determination and I couldn't be shy. Just had to let all my ideas flow on the paper." Nevaeh's play teaches that there is power in numbers. It was not until all five sisters worked together that they "actually made a difference on that planet."
Neveah has lots of experience with teamwork. She enjoys playing sports, and at school she acts as a Junior Coach facilitating recess activities. She meets regularly with the other Junior Coaches to plan the games, which they lead on a rotating basis through the week.
When asked about her future, Neveah doesn't hesitate for a moment. She says that she plans on becoming a surgeon. "I'm going to medical school, and law school just in case." Grinning ear to ear, she adds, "When you walk in my house all you'll see are degrees and diplomas."
