Young Playwrights' Theater inspires young people to realize the power of their own voices.

KaMiya Barrett

Amazing Alumna, May 2016

“I really love being here.”

KaMiya Barrett’s energy and enthusiasm will knock you off your feet. Every Wednesday afternoon, the Banneker Academic High School senior bounds into YPT’s office for Young Playwrights’ Workshop rehearsal, greeting everyone she sees with a smile, a hug or an infectious laugh.

“[Workshop] is really, really fun,” she says. “It’s a second family. I get to express myself in ways that I don’t get to express myself outside of here.”

Though KaMiya only started in the Workshop this year, this is not her first time working with YPT. As a seventh grader at Lincoln Middle School, she excelled in our In-School Playwriting Program, and was even featured as a Promising Playwright! Her play was about two dogs fighting over a piece of steak, with the underdog Rottweiler coming out victorious. “It’s basically saying, ‘Don’t judge the little guy.’ Little people are always ... bigger than the ones you think are gonna win,” she says.

Her time in the In-School Program inspired KaMiya to keep writing and start acting: five years later, she has performed in several Shakespeare plays, and writes poetry which she publishes on a blog called Never No More. When she found out about the Young Playwrights’ Workshop, she didn’t hesitate to join! “I look forward to coming every Wednesday,” she smiles.

With the Workshop and the school year wrapping up, KaMiya is looking ahead. The ensemble’s final performance falls on the same day as her high school graduation, and not long after she will leave for the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore, where she plans to study computer science!

Even with college on the horizon, KaMiya is already planning to pay the Workshop a visit or two. “Do not give up,” she tells her fellow young artists. “Keep doing it and when I come back from college ... I wanna see how the play turns out.”

We can’t wait to show you, KaMiya! We’re so glad you came back into our world!
