An Important Message for the YPT Community

An Important Message for the YPT Community

Dear Friends of YPT,

In response to last week’s declaration by Mayor Muriel E. Bowser of a District of Columbia state of emergency, and with an awareness of increasing reports of event cancellations over concerns about COVID-19 (coronavirus), we have made the difficult decision to postpone our performances of Silence is Violence, scheduled for April 9 through May 2, and our 25th Anniversary Gala, scheduled for April 27. Our regular In-School and After-school arts education programming will also be suspended while local schools are closed. While we were optimistic last week that we could responsibly proceed with our planned activities, it is now clear that this rapidly evolving situation requires social distancing through the cancellation of school programs, performances and events.

Our deepest thanks go to each and every one of you for the ways you have championed YPT’s work. You are the reason that YPT has already served more than 600 brilliant young people so far this year. You are the reason YPT will continue to serve young people across our region when school and public gatherings resume. The coming months are going to be financially challenging for small nonprofits like YPT. If one of the ways you are responding to this public health crisis is supporting your local community organizations, we hope YPT will be on your list. You can learn more about ways to directly support YPT during this difficult time here

The thought of suspending our work with young people, teaching artists and theater artists saddens us greatly, but the health and well-being of our community is paramount at this critical moment. We continue to believe strongly in the power of uplifting community voices and stories, especially in challenging times. In the coming weeks, we plan to identify future dates to reschedule our Silence is Violence performances. Our 25th Anniversary Gala at Arena Stage has been postponed to Monday, June 22, 2020, and we look forward to a joyful, celebratory gathering with all of you at that time.

If you purchased a ticket for our Silence is Violence performances, your refund has been processed. Tickets purchased for our 25th Anniversary Gala will be honored for the new date of June 22. If you have any questions or concerns, please email Teshonne at regarding performance tickets or Jessica at regarding Gala tickets.

If you have any questions about COVID-19, we refer you to the DC Government’s official Coronavirus website at and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website at

Thank you for your patience, understanding and support.
