In Residency at Howard University's Department of Theatre Arts

October 2020 - March 2021

In light of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the nation's growing awareness about racism and oppression after the death of George Floyd, Jr., Silence is Violence: The Future of the Field will explore how young theatre artists from Howard University envision the future of American theatre. Selected Howard students will participate in a devising process in the fall semester; student performers will take part in a rehearsal and filming process with professional actors in the spring semester. All students will receive university credits for their participation in this project.

Production Schedule

  • September 14 - 30, 2020: Video submissions accepted
  • October 5, 2020: Callbacks (virtual)
  • October - November 2020 (exact dates and times TBD): Devising process, which will include writing workshops, group conversations, and one-on-one interviews with YPT
  • January 4 - 22, 2021 (exact dates and times TBD): Rehearsal process (virtual)
  • January 25 - February 12, 2021: Filming process (virtual or in-person, depending on the pandemic)
  • February 15 - March 5, 2021: Video editing and reshoots (if needed)
  • March 20, 2021: Tentative premiere date

How to Submit

Send an email to casting@yptdc.org that includes the following:

  • A cover letter that details who you are as an artist
  • Your headshot and resume
  • Your availability for callbacks on October 5th
  • Your conflicts for the fall semester
  • For performers: A YouTube link to a video (no longer than 3 minutes) of you performing a piece that captures your strengths as an artist. This could be a monologue, song, poem, dance, etc.
  • For non-performers: A creative writing sample

The submission deadline is Wednesday, September 30, 2020, at 11:59 pm.
