Summer Playwriting Program
The Summer Playwriting Program provides students with the tools necessary to create and perform their own plays, including lessons in playwriting, acting and design. With support from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, YPT facilitates Summer Playwriting Workshops at eight DC school sites through the All the World's a Stage Program. The program begins with instruction in playwriting and storytelling, guiding the students toward a collaborative, devised play, then transitions into performance workshops with Keegan Theatre teaching artists who help the students perform their plays in front of friends, family and peers.
Creative Literacy and Storytelling Series (CLASS)
In the 2018-2019 school year, YPT piloted CLASS at SEED School of Washington, DC, concurrently teaching our SEED School After-School Playwriting Program and guiding the SEED faculty in using arts integration to support and enhance learning in their classrooms. CLASS partnerships are developed directly with our Program Director and seek to provide a deeper arts-integrated experience for all program participants that directly supports the needs of the students, the school and the community. CLASS is YPT’s new model of holistic arts integration programming. A professional teaching artist spends a full day each week in CLASS partner schools, teaching students to use playwriting and storytelling to more deeply investigate and internalize their academic curriculum.
Lab Ensemble for Acting and Devising (LEAD)
YPT programming also expanded with LEAD. Students work to collectively devise a dramatic piece and perform it publicly at the culmination of the program. LEAD originated out a student-expressed need for a safe space for LGBTQ students to express themselves creatively in a safe space.
Celebrate the Creative Spark!
With support from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, for the past few years, YPT has brought accelerated playwriting workshops to DC classrooms in the spring semester of a school year.
