| Thank
You...and Happy Holidays! |
|

A
giant-sized thank you to everyone who has donated to YPT
this holiday season!
As
you know, this has been a challenging year for
YPT.
Due to the difficult economic climate and a number of
deep government funding cuts, we are faced with a tough
choice as we plan our programming this
spring.
We
need to raise $50,000 to
meet the ever-increasing demand for our programs in
2011.
Because
of you, we are now more than half way to our
goal!
If
you have not yet made your gift to YPT this year,
we urge you to click on the link below and make a
tax-deductible gift of any amount to show our students
their voices count:

If
you are one of the hundreds of community members who
have already demonstrated your support for YPT this
year, we thank you - your support
and belief in us makes hundreds of students' dreams come
true each year. Now, we ask you to please help us
spread the word about YPT's work in the community
and our holiday fundraising campaign.
Together,
we will reach our fundraising goal this holiday
season.
Thank
you! We wish you a warm and wonderful holiday
season. |
| Professional
Actors Visit YPT Classrooms to Celebrate Student
Plays |
|
|
As 2010 comes to a close, YPT
is celebrating the end of our fall semester of
programming. Nine teaching artists worked for 12
weeks, with 450 elementary, middle, and high school
students, in 8 schools throughout Washington, DC
and Arlington, VA.
Over the course of the semester,
each student created an original play.
Our imaginative students wrote plays
about topics ranging from two-headed magical
snakes and talking pens to social prejudices and
journeys towards
moral righteousness. During the final
In-School workshops this
week, students had the opportunity to experience
their plays performed by professional
actors.
Check out YPT's latest blog post for a look inside the
classroom, from the perspective of one of YPT's amazing
teaching artists.
Now it's time for YPT's reading
committee of professional artists to select
the plays that will be produced in YPT's
annual New
Play Festival on April 11, 12,
and 13, 2011. Mark your calendars! We can can't wait to
share these plays with
you. |
| This Year's
Express Tour Was the Biggest in YPT
History |
|
|
YPT's 2011 Express
Tour came to a close last week
after sharing professional performances of
student-written plays with over 6,000 students and
community members.
The Tour
travelled to an unprecedented 51 venues throughout
Greater Washington, including schools, nursing homes,
children's hospitals, professional theaters, and a
special stop on the National Mall to perform for
participants in Fannie Mae's Help the Homeless
Walk. Nearly one hundred enthusiastic walkers
celebrated their achievement by attending the
performance, which featured The Good Neighbor,
YPT's original play about homelessness in the DC
region.

scenes look at YPT's experience working with
students and community organizations to create The

Phillips |

Promising
Playwright
"I like to write poems
about animals, food and about my mom," Donyeah Phillips
says. Now, because of YPT's In-School
Playwriting Program at his school, Donyeah
also enjoys writing plays.
"My play was about me
and my sister, Jaz," Donyeah explains. "In the play,
she's always going out to play with her friends but I
want her to stay home with me. So I use candy that has
special powers to make her stay at
home."
Donyeah's sister, Jaz,
is five years old. "She goes out a lot," Donyeah says.
"She goes to the playground and stuff."
Donyeah also has a new
baby brother, Samad. "It feels good to be the oldest
one," Donyeah says. "Whatever I do, they're going to
want to do because they want to be like me. I have to
make good choices, like don't talk back to your mom,
don't get bad grades, and don't fight in school. My mom
is proud of me because I made honor roll for my sixth
grade year. They gave me a medal, a certificate and an
award."
When he grows up,
Donyeah wants to get a degree and become a famous
football player for the Washington
Redskins. For more Promising
