Robert Scalzo
Promising Playwright, August 2010

Robert Scalzo participated in Young Playwrights’ Theater’s In-School Playwriting Program as part of his fourth grade class at Lafayette Elementary School.

“I wrote a really funny play,” he says, smiling. “It’s about a really weird rich dude named Captain Po Po Money Britches who wants to get a red trash can from another guy. They don’t have a lot of dialogue. They just stare at each other for long moments and make funny faces.”

Robert enjoys writing. His favorite story is one he wrote about a magical pair of pants. “They give you special powers,” he explains. “They make you shrink down to a tiny size. You can fit anything in their pockets and they look like they are on fire. In one story a person wearing these pants has to go outside and save an ant hill from a bee attack. It is difficult because the person is stuck as a small person and the bee is bigger than him. It is a real battle.”

When asked where he gets these ideas he says, “I just start writing and it comes to my head!”

Robert also enjoys baseball, hockey and playing with his sister Lucy and their dog Scout.

“When I grow up, I want to be a writer or an actor,” Robert says. “I want to work on a show where I’m the voice of a character with a really squeaky voice.”
