Young Playwrights' Theater inspires young
people to realize the power of their own voices.

The Nation of Immigrants Project
Presented by Patrick Crowley and YPT

Who gets to decide who belongs in the United States of America?

Young Playwrights’ Theater and playwright Patrick Crowley, in partnership with GALA Hispanic Theatre, presented the professional premiere of The Nation of Immigrants Project.  The community was invited to readings and discussion of this new play, generated via community and in-school workshops and written by Patrick Crowley with support from the Creative Communities Fund of the National Capital Region. The evening was an exciting exploration of multiple points of view, hot button topics and great insight into one artistic process and how a community can integrate their voices and views into a work of art.   We are gratified that so many chose to join us and offer their points of view on this Nation of Immigrants.  Special thanks to GALA Hispanic Theatre.

The December 2007 performance represented the culmination of 12 months of artistic work and community exploration by Patrick Crowley on the topic of immigration. Patrick led writing workshops in schools and community centers and met with community activists and national leaders. He melded stories from the news with first-hand accounts from those on the front lines.

In June of 2007, an ensemble of student and professional actors presented the raw material of A Nation of Immigrants at Busboys and Poets to a packed house. Through the dialogue that followed, students, activists, neighbors and friends shared their passions and insights on immigration.

Performance dates: December 17, 18, 19, at GALA Hispanic Theatre, 7:30 PM

Patrick Crowley is a Washington DC based playwright, director and teaching artist who has worked with YPT for more than three years as an instructor in the In-school Playwriting Program at Bell Multicultural High School. Patrick has "a fervent belief that art doesn’t exist in a vacuum." He is drawn to the topic of immigration to answer the question "What makes up our American character – can we live up to our ideals of tolerance and inclusion?" Patrick is a 2006 recipient of the Mayor’s Arts Award as an outstanding emerging artist.
